Paneer Matar Pav Bhaji: A Street Food Classic You'll Love


A beloved Mumbai street food classic, Paneer Matar Pav Bhaji brings together soft mashed veggies, tender paneer, and sweet green peas in a richly spiced, buttery gravy, mopped up with toasted and buttered pav buns. This recipe makes a quick, filling snack or light meal that's sure to satisfy your street food cravings at home.

Ingredients

  • Sunrise Pav Bhaji Masala

  • Paneer (cubed)

    250 g
  • Refined Oil

    30 ml
  • Ginger Paste

    2 tbsp
  • Onion (finely chopped)

    1 large
  • Green Chillies (finely chopped)

    2 tbsp
  • Tomatoes (finely chopped)

    1 large
  • Green Peas (shelled)

    150 g
  • Sunrise Red Chilli Powder

    2 tsp
  • Salt

    to taste
  • Butter (for bhaji)

    2 tsp
  • Water

    as required
  • Pav (to be toasted with butter)

    as needed

Sunrise tip: For a smoother bhaji, use a potato masher to mash the boiled veggies and paneer together until well combined but still slightly chunky.

 

Steps

Step 1: Prepare the bhaji base

Time: 8 minutes

Heat refined oil in a large kadai or wok. Add the finely chopped onions and sauté until soft and translucent.

Stir in the ginger paste, finely chopped green chillies and finely chopped tomatoes. Cook for 1 minute until pulpy..

 

Step 2: Add spices and paneer

Time: 5 minutes

Mix in some paneer cubes and the shelled peas on top of the onion-ginger masala. Mash them properly.

Add the Sunrise Pav Bhaji Masala, Sunrise Red Chilli powder, salt to taste and some water to the kadai.

Stir well and cook for 5 minutes.

 

Step 3: Finish the bhaji

Time: 2 minutes

Add some more Sunrise Pav Bhaji Masala and a butter cube. Mix well. Transfer it to a serving bowl and garnish with chopped coriander leaves.

 

Step 4: Toast pav and serve

Time: 10 minutes

Heat a tawa or griddle and add some butter.

Slice the pav buns horizontally and place them on the tawa, cut side down. Let them toast until golden and crisp.

Flip and toast the other side. Serve the hot bhaji in bowls with the toasted pav, chopped red onions, and lemon wedges on the side.
